Overview

An exceptional vintage outdoor planter designed by pioneering Swiss industrial designer Willy Guhl for Eternit circa 1960. This rare silhouette features a beautifully balanced biomorphic form, featuring a wide rounded base that dramatically pinches inward before flaring out gracefully at the rim. Forged from Guhl's signature molded fiber cement, this sculptural vessel has spent decades outdoors, developing a deeply layered, patina. The heavily textured matte surface boasts stunning organic mineral staining, showcasing earthy grays, mossy greens, and soft, muted purple undertones. It stands as a striking testament to mid-century functional simplicity and is highly sought after by collectors of modernist landscape and interior design. Good condition with wear as shown. Designer Notes
Willy Guhl
b. 1915
Willy Guhl was a Swiss industrial designer, who in the mid-20th century pioneered the application of utilitarian materials, notably concrete, in modern outdoor furniture design, such as his in the design of his iconic Loop Chair. Guhl became renowned for his use of fiber-reinforced concrete, a composite material that combines cement with fibers to enhance strength and durability. His designs, marked by clean lines and functional elegance, reflect a commitment to both beauty and use. Guhl's design and creative use of materials contributed to a redefinition of the aesthetic and functional possibilities of concrete in design during the mid-20th century.
