“Sprite” Sculpture
A rare, large-scale polychrome wood sculpture by Connecticut Pop artist Leo Jensen. Made in 1964. “Sprite” depicts a nude female bust with green-painted wings sweeping out to each side, rising on a tall column from a wooden plinth base. Carved and painted daisies ring the waist above a wooden box that holds an At-A-Glance calendar, still set to 2011, the last year the piece was exhibited. Maker’s mark on verso. Made the same year as Jensen’s best-known Pop assemblages, “Sprite” shows the wit and irreverence that defined his work. A striking, conversation-starting statement piece from a significant moment in American Pop art.
