Designer Notes
Max Gottschalk
b. 1909
Max Gottschalk (1909-2005) was an American-born industrial furniture designer whose work is admired for its durability and visual appeal. After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, Gottschalk moved to the British Dominion of Newfoundland in modern-day Canada, where he was hired to design workshop furniture for the local agricultural community. After the onset of World War II, Gottschalk returned to America, where he became a professor of Industrial Design and the Modernist style at Pima college in Tuscon, Arizona. During his time there he blended Southwestern aesthetics and Modern principles, utilizing natural materials such as stretched leather and black steel to design furniture which married his appreciation for nature and his love for Modernism.
