Incredible 10.5 foot long California highway freeway sign, removed from active service on Interstate 5 in California and directing traffic toward Los Angeles. Iconic federal highway green with the tricolor Interstate 5 shield at left, the sign reads "Los Angeles" above "Right Lane" in the reflective button-copy lettering characteristic of mid- to late-twentieth-century American road signage — a technique in which thousands of individually mounted glass or acrylic reflector buttons form each letter, engineered to catch headlights and glow at night. Largely phased out in favor of sheet reflective vinyl by the early 2000s, button copy is now a sought-after hallmark among collectors of highway and transportation ephemera for its dimensional, hand-assembled quality and unmistakable period character. Presents beautifully as large-scale industrial wall art, with a graphic, text-driven composition that reads equally well in a design studio, any California home, a garage or den, or a collector's gallery of Americana and automobilia. Dated 1966 on the back. Massive in size. Amazing piece of LA history.
