Overview

Ultra rare and witty sculptural bench by American studio craftsman Bobby Reed Falwell, signed and dated 1978. Falwell studied under Wendell Castle and worked in Kentucky, hand-carving one-of-a-kind furniture in the organic modern tradition of the American studio craft movement. The bench takes the form of a reclining female figure. Her oak body is carved with soft, naturalistic contours and inset with walnut details, and she rests on two carved oak legs with sculpted knees and feet. Her head and shoulders are carved from walnut and stand on a freeform walnut support. Hand-cut through-tenon joinery shows on the top at the foot, a mark of the handwork that went into the piece. The bench has a strong sense of humor and sculptural presence. It works as a bench, a low coffee table, or a sculptural object.  Incredibly well done and terribly cool.  No bench has ever hit the public market for sale. Fantastic piece of collectible design.
