Extremely rare Alexander Calder jute tapestry. This is the 'Sun' design tapestry. Made in Guatemala, in 1974. Gorgeous coloring and large sized. Excellent condition. These tapestries were made to benefit a natural disaster in Central America. This piece is number 73 of 100 pieces made. Numbered at bottom left. CA and date to bottom right.  Original circular rings to reverse for hanging on the wall. Mounted to a wood board for seamless hanging. Museum quality lucite box included in sale. Calder adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the tapestries are in museums today. Amazing piece of collectible design.

Alexander Calder
b. 1898
Alexander Calder was born July 22, 1898 in Lawnton, Pennsylvania. Calder was an American sculptor known both for his innovative mobiles, his static "stabiles", and his monumental public sculptures. Calder's work is in many permanent collections across the world. The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, has the largest body of work by Alexander Calder. Other museum collections include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and there are two pieces on display in the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza Art Collection in Albany, NY.
