Hand Carved Wood Spirit Sculpture
Incredibly well done hand-carved wood spirit emerging from a weathered slab of timber. The face of a bearded elder rises from the grain, with deep-set eyes, a furrowed brow and fine crow’s-feet lines. His long hair and beard pour down and back in sweeping ridges that follow the natural grain, so the figure seems to grow out of the wood itself. Behind him, a tall jagged section of raw, uncarved wood rises like a fin. It gives the piece a dramatic asymmetrical silhouette and leaves part of the original log showing. Years of weathering have turned the surface a soft, silvery gray with hints of warm rust tones. Deep checking, cracks and open grain add to its organic, folk-art character. The piece sits freestanding on the floor and has real visual weight. Super striking. Looks great on the floor or displayed on a table.
