Overview

A sphere built entirely from cubes, Dunk-bit reimagines the basketball through the visual language of 1980s 8-bit and 16-bit video games. Hand cut and crafted from the same leather used in official NBA basketballs. Seen from a distance, the form resolves into a sphere; up close, it breaks into hundreds of stepped facets, each one a deliberate “pixel.” The tension between those two readings is the heart of the piece: perfection at a glance, beautifully imperfect on closer study. The sculpture rests on a stepped, mirror-polished aluminum base that reflects the form back into itself, doubling the composition and drawing the eye in again. Though every cube is identical, the interplay of angle, shadow, and reflection makes the surface appear to shift as the viewer moves around it. The work is made entirely by hand in Venice Beach, California, by Charles Lushear with no CNC machining, laser cutting, or 3D printing. Each element of textured leather and acrylic was individually hand-cut and joined to a fiberboard armature, and the aluminum base was likewise cut by hand. The piece represents more than 600 hours of studio work. A singular, one-of-a-kind object that bridges sport, nostalgia, and contemporary craft, equally compelling in a collector’s living space, office, or media room.
