Jute 'Serpents' Tapestry
Extremely rare Alexander Calder jute tapestry. Made in Guatemala in 1975. Image depicts two intertwined serpents in red and blue. This piece is number 23 of 100 pieces made. Hand embroider edition number to bottom left. Hand embroidered CA 75' to bottom right. Hand embroidered C to top left.
Calder donated 14 drawings/designs to be made into tapestries by weavers in Guatemala and Nicaragua. Each artist contributed limited edition art which was sold, and the money gained was used for earthquake victims. This is one of those 14 designs he contributed. He adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the tapestries are in museums today. Good condition with a small area of fraying as shown. Only one available.
