Calder 'Circus' Jute Tapestry
This stunning Alexander Calder 'Circus' jute tapestry is the real deal in terms of authenticity, uniqueness, rarity and beauty. Made in 1975, signed "Calder, 75" on lower right.
This piece will bring a breath of fresh air to any space in your home. Pictured on the tapestry is a whimsical trapeze artist floating mid-air. Beneath him lies a monumental colosseum with circus workers strewn about.
The simple coloring of this piece sets it apart from other Calder works that are maximalist and bright. For 'Circus' Calder only used black dye and raw undyed maguey fiber - making it a minimalist and timeless piece of art. The raw jute fabric gives this piece incredible texture and a breezy vibe that makes it perfect for a warm weather escape.
Place this monumental piece of art in your bedroom, living room, kitchen, game room, screened-in porch or anywhere in your home to bring a fun-loving, yet elegant vibe. Sit back and marvel at this massive creation of fine craftsmanship.
This tapestry and others like it were made in Guatemala to benefit a natural disaster in Central America. There was an earthquake in 1972, in Nicaragua and Guatemala that killed hundreds of people and a group of artists formed a relief fund. Each artist contributed limited edition art which was sold, and the money gained was used for the earthquake victims. This piece is number 86 of 100 pieces made. Numbered at bottom left. Calder adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the tapestries are in museums today. Great condition.
