Danny Ho Fong
b. 1915
Danny Ho Fong (1915-1992) was a groundbreaking figure in rattan furniture design, significantly influencing mid-20th century decorative arts. Born in Canton and settling in California in the 1930s, his journey from immigrant to celebrated designer reflects his resilience and creativity. Fong founded TropiCal, which transformed rattan furniture from simple patio items to elegant interior pieces. By the 1960s, he was recognized as a leading contemporary designer, known for merging traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. His innovative use of rattan elevated it to an art form, and his designs continue to inspire, with much of today’s rattan furniture produced in the Philippines and Indonesia. The Set of Six Wicked Chairs exemplifies his mastery and enduring legacy in furniture design.
