Jute 'Swirl' Tapestry
Extremely rare Alexander Calder jute tapestry. Swirl pattern. Made in Guatemala in 1975. Calder drew 14 designs for a rug or tapestry and a limited edition of each was made by weavers in Guatemala from local fibers. There was an earthquake in 1972, in Nicaragua and Guatemala that killed hundreds of people and a group of artists formed a relief fund. Each artist contributed limited edition art which was sold, and the money gained was used for the earthquake victims. This piece was number 14 of 100 pieces made. This is one of those 14 designs he contributed. He adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the rugs are in museums today. Great condition. Gorgeous coloring. CA 75 signature on bottom right.
