Overview

Iconic pair of concrete loop chairs by Willy Guhl.

This pair of chairs were designed by Willy Guhl in 1954 after Guhl watched as the Eternit panels left a machine at the Eternit factory in Niederurnen. With a beautiful pastel yellow patina these Loop chairs feature a single sheet of seats and backs and are suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Willy Guhl had already determined the ergonomically correct seat profile with his brother's help in 1947 using impressions in clay made by sitting test persons, which were then cast in plaster. Like a sculptor, Guhl then reworked the seating loop's radii, always with a mind to the economy of production and the structural and material requirements.

Hand made in Switzerland in the 1960s.

Priced as a pair.

Designer Notes
Willy Guhl
b. 1915
Willy Guhl was a Swiss industrial designer, who in the mid-20th century pioneered the application of utilitarian materials, notably concrete, in modern outdoor furniture design, such as his in the design of his iconic Loop Chair. Guhl became renowned for his use of fiber-reinforced concrete, a composite material that combines cement with fibers to enhance strength and durability. His designs, marked by clean lines and functional elegance, reflect a commitment to both beauty and use. Guhl's design and creative use of materials contributed to a redefinition of the aesthetic and functional possibilities of concrete in design during the mid-20th century.
